2026 AIA Colorado | Award of Merit

For Parkside Villa, the recognition reflects a project defined not by starting over, but by seeing new potential in what was already there.

The renovation transforms an existing 9,100-square-foot Boulder residence through a series of precise architectural interventions. Rather than erasing the original home, the design works within its existing framework, reorganizing spaces, strengthening connections to the landscape, and introducing new architectural elements that give the house an entirely different relationship to its site.

Parkside Villa represents an idea central to our work at Studio B: thoughtful architecture does not always require a blank slate. Sometimes the most meaningful design comes from understanding what is already there, deciding what deserves to remain, and making a few rigorous moves that fundamentally change how a home is experienced.

2023 AIA Colorado | Award of Merit

Recognized with an AIA Colorado Award of Merit, Linden Grove is a modern interpretation of the rural and agricultural architecture once characteristic of its Boulder setting. Two parallel gabled forms organize the home while creating privacy around a protected landscape of orchard, gardens, and pool. A restrained palette of weathered cedar, blackened steel, board-formed concrete, marble, and white oak carries from exterior to interior, while expansive openings connect the living spaces to daylight and the surrounding landscape. Designed around multigenerational living, wellness, and environmental performance, including a 21 kW photovoltaic system, the home brings regional character and contemporary living together in an architecture deeply connected to its place.

2020 AIA Colorado | Award of Distinction

Recognized with an AIA Colorado Award of Excellence and an Award of Distinction, Vista Drive Pavilion is inspired by the work of artist Robert Kelly and conceived as a composition of solids and voids, darkness and light, and varying levels of transparency. Set among the trees in a neighborhood of midcentury and ranch-style homes, the residence takes the form of a black trapezoidal volume beneath a distinctive five-ridge metal roof. Carefully placed openings penetrate the dark exterior, bringing changing qualities of daylight into the home while creating connections to the surrounding gardens. Inside, white walls and white oak floors contrast with a dark central kitchen core, while shifting rooflines create varied spatial experiences throughout. The result is a quiet exterior containing a complex interplay of geometry, light, intimacy, and openness.

2019 AIA Colorado | Award of Distinction

Recognized with an AIA Colorado Award of Excellence and an Award of Distinction, Blur explores the boundary between architecture and landscape through a composition designed to feel both grounded and visually light. Strong horizontal planes extend beyond the building envelope, framing views and creating a continuous relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Glass, stone, wood, and concrete are used with restraint, allowing light, landscape, and changing conditions to become part of the architecture itself. The result is a residence in which the distinction between building and site begins to blur, creating a home defined as much by its surroundings as by its physical form.
