Robby Cuthbert, AIA

Born in rural Western Massachusetts, Robby grew up with a deep appreciation for nature, making, and the outdoors. He studied studio art and psychology at Williams College, focusing primarily on sculpture and architecture and developing an interest in how abstract ideas can be translated into precisely constructed forms.

After graduating, Robby founded and operated a furniture design business in the San Francisco Bay Area for four years. His work was featured in Sunset Magazine, American Craft Magazine, and Core77, and in 2014 he was invited to exhibit at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show as its youngest exhibitor.

Seeking larger and more complex design challenges, Robby returned to school and earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado. As part of CU’s Design-Build program, he helped design and construct backcountry facilities along the Longs Peak Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, an experience that reinforced his interest in architecture shaped by context, material, and restraint. The project later received a 2019 AIA National Small Project Award, and Robby was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal as the top graduate student in CU’s architecture program.

Robby’s relationship with Studio B began before he joined the firm full time, spending two summers building architectural models for the studio. That hands-on approach continues to influence the way he works today. With a background in sculpture and furniture design, he sees craft, experimentation, and making as integral parts of the design process, not simply ways to represent a finished idea.

Since joining Studio B, Robby has grown into a licensed architect and key member of the design team, contributing to projects from early concept through construction. His work includes Spring Valley and Parkside Villa, where his attention to detail, material relationships, and the translation of complex design ideas into built form have played an important role in the architecture.

Whether working through a physical model, studying a detail, or collaborating in the field, Robby brings curiosity and rigor to the process, continually testing how an idea can become clearer, simpler, and more precisely resolved.

Outside the studio, Robby takes every opportunity to explore the landscape that surrounds the work. He enjoys running, biking, and cross-country skiing in the mountains with his wife and dog.
