Modern In Denver

Nicknamed the ‘Quonset Hut’ for its unique barrel-shaped nave, the original Christ Episcopal Church was constructed in 1962 in Aspen’s Historic West End. After numerous alterations and minor additions, the CEC sought to unify and update the aging and inefficient structure thru a significant renovation and addition effort.

Using the existing church’s modernist roots as cues, the addition differs in form and scale to compliment the historic resource. The design enhanced the worship and fellowship facilities for the church’s growing congregation, and provided administrative, hospitality and support spaces for church staff. This has allowed the church to continue its significant contributions to the Aspen community, to minister to its congregation’s spiritual needs and to maintain its long-standing identity in Aspen’s West End. The exterior is composed of chiseled stone, zinc, aluminum doors and windows and cedar siding.
