Aspen’s architectural story takes center stage in Private Aspen: Modernism in the Mountains, the latest release from Phaidon authored by Helen Thompson. Showcasing eighteen remarkable residences, the book highlights the evolution of modernism in the Rockies, and we are proud that our Conundrum Creek Residence is among those featured. Designed to harmonize luxury living with the surrounding wilderness, Conundrum Creek reflects Studio B’s commitment to architecture that balances design, nature, and mountain lifestyle.
The Conundrum Creek Residence is built along the Conundrum Springs trailhead in Aspen, Colorado. Its design shows a deep sensitivity to site: a transparent great room at its heart connects to the outdoors through expansive glazing, offering sweeping views of the river and surrounding woods. The house consists of two wings: a northern wing with guest rooms and a garage, and a primary suite on the southern side, each oriented to capture different aspects of the valley and river’s flow. Covered decks and a long, shed-style roof unify the structure, softening the boundary between inside and landscape.
The inclusion of Conundrum Creek in the book adds to a growing portfolio of mountain homes that are not just status symbols but expressions of place. Aspen’s steep terrain, dramatic seasonal changes, and ecological sensitivity present unique challenges, as well as opportunities, for design.
Private Aspen: Modernism in the Mountains aims to document Aspen’s growing tradition of modernist private homes, those that embrace rigorous design while making peace with their mountainous surroundings. The book highlights homes made with reclaimed wood, local stone, glazing that frames views, and interiors that let in light, air, and vistas. Conundrum Creek fits this ethos. Its architecture echoes Aspen’s past modernist impulses even as it adopts sustainable design and an organic relationship to its site.
While Private Aspen is slated to ship in mid-October 2025, critics and design lovers have already praised its photography and richness more than 150 photos, plus interviews with architects and homeowners, promise an intimate and visually rewarding tour of Aspen’s private architecture.
Being included alongside such remarkable homes in Private Aspen is a true privilege. We are grateful to Phaidon, and Helen Thompson for recognizing our work and for capturing the spirit of Aspen’s evolving architectural story.
Conundrum Creek’s inclusion confirms that Aspen’s next architectural frontier is less about flamboyant peaks and more about subtle dialogue: between building and site, view and structure, human and wild. Private Aspen promises to celebrate these dialogues, and Conundrum Creek is a compelling voice in that conversation.
We can’t wait to explore the full collection and discover the other remarkable homes that share in telling Aspen’s evolving modernist story.
