Every project begins with listening.

Before we begin designing, our clients complete what we call the Studio B Residential Survey, a detailed exploration of how they live, what they value, and what they want from their home.

We want to understand more than how many bedrooms or bathrooms are required. We want to know how mornings unfold. Where people naturally gather. How they entertain. What they collect. Whether they want connection or separation. Which daily rituals deserve more attention.

Those responses begin to shape the program, but their influence doesn’t end there.

The Residential Survey remains part of the conversation throughout schematic design and into interior design, helping inform decisions at every scale, from the organization of the home to furniture planning, storage, materials, lighting, and millwork.

The goal isn’t simply to make a home custom.

It’s to make it personal enough that it couldn’t belong to anyone else.

Only in This Place.

The other half of the equation is the site.

Every property gives us a different set of conditions: topography, views, sunlight, vegetation, climate, neighboring structures, privacy, and the changing seasons.

We study those conditions before deciding what the architecture should become.

A steep site might suggest stepping the building into the landscape. A particular view may determine an entire axis through the home. A mature tree might be important enough to shift the architecture around it. Morning and evening light can influence where spaces are placed and how they are experienced throughout the day.

We aren’t interested in placing a Studio B house onto a site.

We want the site to help create the house.

Modern Is Not a Look.

Modern architecture is often reduced to an aesthetic: flat roofs, large expanses of glass, minimal detailing.

We think about it differently.

For us, modern means clarity.

Honest materials. Purposeful spaces. Thoughtful proportions. Details that have been studied until they feel simple.

That simplicity often requires rigor. We test, edit, refine, and sometimes reconsider decisions entirely until the architecture feels resolved.

Restraint is part of that process. Not every surface needs another material. Not every opportunity needs to become a design gesture. Often, the strongest decision is knowing what can be removed.

The result should feel effortless precisely because it wasn’t.

No Signature Style

After more than three decades of work, there are qualities that connect Studio B projects, but we don’t believe our homes should all look alike.

We would rather someone recognize the thinking behind the work than a signature aesthetic.

The connection to landscape. The use of natural light. The precision of a detail. The relationship between architecture and interiors. The restraint to allow one important material, view, or moment to carry more weight.

These are principles, not formulas.

Because repeating a formula would contradict the very idea of Singular Modern.

Architecture That Feels Inevitable

The best projects eventually reach a point where the decisions no longer feel arbitrary.

The window belongs exactly there.

The material feels inseparable from the architecture.

The rooms make sense for the people who inhabit them.

The building feels grounded in its landscape.

That sense of inevitability is what we’re searching for.

Not the most dramatic solution. Not the trend of the moment. Not a house that could be copied and placed somewhere else.

A home that feels as though it could only have been created for these people, on this site, at this moment.

That is Singular Modern.
